I cannot tell my dad to use only enough water while shaving, I cannot tell my father-in-law to be cognizant about vote bank politics, I cannot tell myself to rinse and get the milk/curd packets dried before throwing them in the bin...oh but I can say anything to my kid, for now! So the point is it's not that my father or father-in-law or some elderly person (which also includes me!) are unaware of what they are doing but some things just cannot change! U bet! I'm sure all of us would have seen a bit of it in all of us. What do you think would have been a proper way for us to change? Get most of the things right at the right age. That's why I said that I can try teaching anything to my kid. When I was a kid there was no such thing as garbage segregation as people never felt the need to do it. Now there is so much hue and cry about the dispose of garbage, of course it has to be, as we reached the verge of unthinkable unimaginable diseases people are contracting these days. So if as a kid i and every other kid was taught to segregate garbage, we would have been living in a much better environment with fewer problems. And that value of safeguarding the environment should have been in my curriculum for sure along with the other things. We don't have proper curriculum to educate kids in the must essential things like planting trees, rain water harvesting, fire safety, sexual abuse, community work, recycling options, garbage segregation etc and we feel bad if they dont start following them all of a sudden when they are grown up. Having such great conscious presence of mind is rare these days! I feel all these kind of basic things should be a part of your education, and if at all it's already happening at some place, that's really really commendable! But the education should be in such a way that it should inculcate a 'thinking mind' rather than 'following the rules mind' as we ought to forget the basic need of learning such things. In future, a person should be able to put to use what he has learnt in past according to the living conditions he has at that point and just not repeat the process he has studied in text books. Such kind of education is as good as not learning them in the first place! There is a limit to each and every person in following the right practice. But that limit should never go down below the acceptable and permissible levels of nature. Otherwise, forget about luxury, but our kids and the coming generations will lose the basic right to live peacefully, happily and with good health. Let's understand the difference between being cautious and luxurious from the next time we use a resource for living. And let's promote that kind of adaptability and thinking, not to compromise but to make the best use of what we have to lead a happy life :)
A recent experience of directing a drama with children opened up new perspectives to the mother and teacher in me. As I was pondering about the art of acting as someone in a story, it dawned upon me that children are born actors. Look around to see how natural it is for a young child to imitate others all the time, so well without any inhibition or filter. A child naturally lives in the other to understand what it means to be the other - it is profound learning, and hard work that they are doing. It is only later, through the years of growing up, we gain the ability to look at others as someone else from the self. Hence we grow the ability to empathise, that we can transform ourselves to feel what it means to be in others shoes and come back to the self - much like playing a role in a drama. As we grow, we invite many roles into our lives (father, mother, brother, son, aunt etc.) and juggle between acting in different roles. We act so well that we actually live in that role and
